Your Dental Crown Questions Answered!

If your tooth becomes cracked or damaged, it may be necessary to repair it using a dental crown. Here at Valley Dental Practice we make crowns for our patients on a daily basis, so you can be safe in the knowledge that you will receive the highest possible level of treatment.

In this month’s blog we look at the most common questions patients ask us about crowns.

1.Do I really need a crown?

Crowns can be used for a number of reasons including, repairing worn or heavily damaged teeth, protecting teeth weakened by root canal treatment or improving the appearance of discoloured teeth. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges and are fixed over dental implants to replace the missing tooth.

2.Will my crown look natural?

Absolutely! All crowns are colour matched so they blend seamlessly with you existing teeth.

3.How many appointments does it take?

Crowns are normally made in two appointments. At the first appointment the tooth is prepared, and impressions are taken. A temporary crown is then put in place to protect your tooth. These are then sent to the laboratory for our dental technician to custom make your new crown. At the second appointment the new crown will be cemented in place.

Here at Valley Dental Practice, we are pleased to also be able to offer same day crowns using our Cerec machine. This takes out the waiting time. The tooth will be prepared and instead of impressions, photos are taken. These are then transferred to the computer where the dentist will craft your new crown. The crown is then milled and fitted. The total process takes around 2 hours.

4.Does a crown procedure hurt?

All treatment will be carried out under local anaesthetic so will be pain free.

5.What are crowns made from?

Crowns can be made from a wide variety of materials including ceramic, porcelain and gold. The dentist will be able to advise you on the best material to meet your needs.

6.How long will my crown last?

With proper care, a crown can last for over 10 years. To ensure that your crown lasts as long as possible, brush your teeth at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and use interdental cleaning aids daily. If you grind your teeth, protect your crown from excessive pressure by wearing a night guard. It is also important to attend for regular dentist and hygienist visits.

7.Can a crowned tooth decay?

Crowns cannot decay but the underlying tooth can. Without proper hygiene a new cavity may form. When this happens your crown will not longer fit and may fall off.
